AgroTerra launches its own regenerative agriculture program

24.04.2023

On the occasion of International Earth Day, which is annually celebrated on April 22, AgroTerra announces its own program of regenerative agriculture. This program involves a series of measures and technologies aimed at preserving and improving soil fertility.

The initiative is intended to last 5-10 years and addresses numerous directions at once, including greenhouse gas emissions reduction, effective resource management, biodiversity and soil fertility enhancement.

AgroTerra has been reducing greenhouse gas emissions since 2021 and has reached some results in this direction. Experiment results show that certain methods not only cut down CO2 emissions but also sequester carbon in the soil. The project's goal is to achieve a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 while enhancing the company's economic sustainability. This project became the foundation for the regenerative agriculture program.

The effective use of resources at AgroTerra translates to the irrigation system used to produce cord and sunflower hybrid seeds. With this goal AgroTerra has created a water balance model that factors in a wide range of soil properties, plant traits, weather conditions, and other relevant variables. This model serves to determine and maintain the optimal soil moisture level.

In pursuit of enhancing biodiversity and soil fertility, AgroTerra employs cover crops. AgroTerra's crop rotation includes from 10 to 15 crops with cover crops included. In addition, to boost soil fertility, the company minimizes tillage intensity and employs direct seeding techniques.

"Our mission is “Stewardship of Earth”. We launched the program to improve environmental sustainability while maintaining high production margins. Recognizing that the soil fertility ensures food security, we understand that it is crucial to protect this resource even after many seasons have passed”, comments Valery Redkin, the director of the Technology Development Center.
